As a part of my book reading system, I list five key concepts I want to remember from every book I read. This article lists my top five nuggets of wisdom from Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. For this Lazy Book Club, we brought to the table (literally, it was on a pub table) Yuval Harari’s ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind’.. Although it’s not technically something you’d see featured in a list of “best strategy books”, it has some fascinating implications for how we see our species, how culture gets created, and other macro things that will get your brain going. The book covers a mind-boggling 13.5 billion years of pre-history and history. From the outset, Harari seeks to establish the multifold forces that made Homo (‘man’) into Homo sapiens (‘wise man’) – exploring the impact of a large brain, tool use, complex social structures and more.
I had just finished the book and I was dying to talk to her about it. It’s so provocative and raises so many questions about human history that I knew it would spark great conversations around the dinner table. It didn’t disappoint. In fact, in the weeks since we’ve been back from our holiday, we still talk about Sapiens.
While Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind wouldn't be possible without the innovations and discoveries of our predecessors, it is also a book which proves that it is not beyond the abilities of one man to distill such a huge expanse of history into a single articulate and highly readable volume, even if such a process at times necessarily lends itself to sweeping generalization and a certain I review Sapiens: A brief history of humankind by Yuval Noah Harari and it's absolutely brilliant.
